Our new company has two volunteer positions - are you able to help?
Shepshed Toy Library has been operating as a trustee led charity for nearly 30 years. It has recently become an incorporated charity and is looking for some support for the toy library coordinator and directors in keeping company finance records, documentation of meetings and other correspondence.
The first role is for a company secretary / administrator whose role will include the following (not exhaustive) duties -
- Attendance at termly committee meetings to take minutes and circulate
- Prepare regular press releases to local newspapers and magazines to advertise and promote the toy library
- Assist with the completion of the quality assurance programme ensuring policies and procedures are updated to reflect changes in legislation
- Attend training / workshops on aspects of volunteering as required
- Assist in the preparation of grant applications needed to generate income for the library to operate.
- Work closely with the toy library coordinator to maintain documentation / membership records
- Update and maintain social media sites including Facebook / Twitter / Blogspot
.
The person would require the following skills
- a knowledge of computer systems including Word, Excel, use of the internet and social media sites. They must have a proven competence in English (both spoken and written) - ideally to Grade C GCSE.
The role will probably be represented by one day a week at the toy library with maybe some work at home - around 4 - 5 hours per week.
The second role is a Finance Officer whose duties will include the following (not exhaustive) -
- Monthly bank reconciliations
- Monthly petty cash analysis and balancing
- Monthly RTI submissions to HMRC (using HMRC toolkit)
- Monthly receipts and payments analysis against budget
- Preparation of Annual Accounts (subject to independent review)
- Annual submissions to Charities Commission and Companies House (Annual turnover below £15K)
- Attendance at termly committee meetings providing finance updates
- Annual budget setting with co-ordinator and committee
There may also be opportunities to become involved in the preparation of grant applications needed to generate income for the library to operate.
Currently our Senior Toy Library coordinator is doing all the financial records for the toy library and this needs an independent verifyer.
The post holder will need a knowledge of small company bookkeeping procedures. Proven qualification in mathematics (Grade C GCSE (or equiv) min). Competent in use of Excel spreadsheets. Some knowledge of HMRC payroll procedures. The role will most likely be home based with occasional visits to the toy library, so access to internet and e mail is essential. It will probably amount to about one hour per month plus attending meetings.

Dear Member We would like to thank you for your continued support in using the Shepshed Toy Library over the last year. At the AGM last year the Committee and those present voted to convert the toy library from an unincorporated charity into a charity incorporated and limited by guarantee. Some of the existing committee members are moving forward to act as Directors of the new company and would like to invite you to the Special General Meeting detailed above in order to gain agreement to transfer the assets and liabilities of the existing toy library to the new company to take effect from 1st April 2014. In reality nothing will change in terms of service, personnel, fees and charges and the provision we offer. However, by moving forward to this new status it will allow the toy library to update or acquire new premises and move the service forward. The meeting will look for toy library members to vote – with one vote per family or group membership – on the proposal and the company documents may be examined. The Directors will also welcome any new comers to the committee (with no liability) to help in these changing times. Please make your intentions known even if you are unable to attend the meeting. Children growing up fast – toys, games and clothes you no longer need? Can’t be bothered with ebay or car boot sales? Then come along to the Nearly New Sale at Shepshed Toy Library – register as a seller and take the hassle out of moving stuff on – and reap the rewards. Full information below!
• People interested in selling at the sale should contact the Toy Library – 01509 601146 or email shepshedtoylib@tiscali.co.uk for a sellers pack.
• Leave name, telephone number and e mail address for contact.
• Sellers pack £2 (cash or cheque payable to Shepshed Toy Library) to cover our administration cost & Stamped Addressed Envelope to receive your sale proceeds after the event (Your admin fee will be deducted from your sales proceeds if not paid in advance)
• You will receive a guidance sheet, sellers sheet and set of sticky labels - max 30 items per seller
• Percentage commission – 40% to toy library 60% to seller
• Emphasis on toys and games for sale – any clothes must be on hangers
• All items to be good quality / toys and games complete no pieces missing
• Sellers will be issued with a unique number and use this for labelling up items.
• Sellers can deposit items from 9am, sale will open from 11 – 2pm.
• Unsold items to be collected by 4pm
• Any remaining items will be accepted as donations to the Toy Library to either add to Toy Library stock or pass to other charitable organisations.
• Sticky labels will be removed from items as proof of sale and totalled up on the day.
• Cheques will be issued to sellers within 7 days of the event.

What can I sell?
You can sell baby and children’s wear (up to aged ten), maternity wear (not oversized ladies wear!), equipment, books and toys.
Clothes:
Each item sold counts towards one of your 30 items so it is best to bundle up babygrows and smaller items. We will only sell items that are of new or nearly new quality, and are clean and in good condition. Remember, this is not a jumble sale – dirty/worn-out goods will be rejected.
Toys:
Toys and puzzles must be complete. Any loose parts should be securely attached. Seal puzzles in clear plastic bag. Toys with batteries sell better if batteries are included.
Equipment:
Equipment items sell better and for more if instructions (and if you have them, guarantees) are included. Be especially careful if selling stair gates, fireguards, barriers and bed guards. These must have all the correct fittings and have no gaps where it would be possible for a baby to get its head stuck. Please include any instructions for use. (These can be duplicates downloaded from manufacturer’s website.) These, together with the fittings, should be securely attached in a separate bag.
Door bouncers, sit in activity centres and baby walkers can also be sold. To minimise the risk of accidents please ensure that door bouncers are sold with assembly instructions including a weight limit. Second hand mattresses can be sold providing they have a waterproof cover (eg. PVC) with no tears, cracks or holes.
Is there anything I can’t sell at the sale?

Can I sell my pushchair?
We can sell pushchairs with or without instructions. Obviously, pushchairs with instructions sell better so if you do have them, please attach these or you can try downloading them from the manufacturers’ website.
I have a baby sling to sell – can I sell it?
Yes, but bag -style slings can’t be sold. They are the ones with a deep pouch and an elasticated edge. Whilst these products have not been recalled, they may cause breathing difficulties in young babies. The brands and products which cannot be accepted are:

How do I make sure I don’t over or under price my items?
The guidelines are that you prices at 20-25% of the original selling price of the item you are selling. Below are some guidelines which may help you.
Please try not to overprice your items otherwise you may be surprised with the number of unsold items you are left with (particularly clothes).
Ask yourself: a) Would I buy it? b) How much would I pay? c) Do I ever want to see this again?

How do I label my items?
Only use the labels sent to you for this sale and do not exceed the maximum (30 items)

DONATION : If you do not wish to collect your unsold items mark a D on your ticket
• Attach the whole label securely.
• Where possible please use hangers for clothes. Smaller items may be placed in clear plastic bags.
• Items with no labels cannot be sold. Any items that don’t have a label will be placed on one side for collection at the end of the sale.
• Please consider sellotaping or cling filming toys that have many pieces together to ensure it stays as one item.
• Please do not label or sort through your items on the day – please ensure they are all labelled and bundled correctly before the day of the sale.
• To help you to monitor your items for sale, we have enclosed a list which we advise you to complete to record items/prices.
• It helps if you can use clearly labelled boxes (Name & seller number) (and not bags) to bring in your items. Any unsold items can then be quickly sorted and returned to you.
Please promote the sale – tell all your friends and ask for a poster for your child’s nursery / school or preschool. The more people that know the better the chance of your items selling!

Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.
Prepare yourself - Take 15 minutes to rest so that you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh- looking. He has just been with a lot of work -weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.
Clear away the clutter - Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too.
Prepare the children - Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair, and if necessary , change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

Summer Term Update
Our trip around the world has provided some focus to our play sessions and has been great fun learning a bit about flags, costume, animals and food from the various countries we have visited.
Several regular users have benefited from completing their passports and have been able to borrow a "Play & Share" sack of their choice for free. Some lovely comments from parents and carers about how wonderful the sacks are in keeping the children occupied and having more surprises as they dig to the depths of the bag.
The term is quickly coming to a close with our last session on July 12th.
We have been successful in gaining funding to support running extra sessions in the summer so will be open for the weeks of 29th July and 19th August for our normal opening hours - Mon / Wed / Fri 9.30 - 12.00 and the Thursday evening of both weeks (1st & 22nd August) from 6.30 - 7.30pm. Please come along to play - charge of £1 per child to include a drink and craft activity of their choice.
We will hopefully have indoor and outdoor activities to suit ages 0 - 11 years. The toy lending library will be open as usual during these sessions.
The toy lending library has had a good shake up with old toys being removed / recycled and new sets compiled of our most popular construction toys. We were successful at some local toy sales and have replenished our games / fine motor skills and jigsaw stocks.
Grant money has also allowed us to purchase some more outdoor toys including our most popular house brick sets. Both currently available to borrow!
Our outreach work is expanding with regular monthly visit to Refuel in Hathern and support to other toddler groups and pre schools on a termly basis. Do get involved - if you want us to visit your setting or hold a childminding group / parent group in the toy library outside our normal hours then anything is possible. Musical Bumps have been regular users of the toy library on a Saturday morning.
We look forward to next term and a new academic year where we are looking to progress even further with your support. If anyone finds themselves at a loose end with children starting school there is scope for more volunteers to come and give us a hand - either playing with the children / running the cafe / checking and sorting toys or helping out with Outreach visits all help is gratefully received.

AROUND THE WORLD ...
This term we are going around the world... we are issuing "passports " to the children visiting our Stay and Play sessions and inviting them to collect a weekly "stamp". Once they have collected 5 stamps they can borrow one of our fabulous Play and Share sacks - absolutely FREE! (toy library membership is required).
Having checked out some different modes of transport we set off this week for Australia. We have looked at koalas, kangeroos and snakes but kept away from the Black Widow spiders ... we have sampled some Australian delicacies including some Anzac biscuits as Australia and New Zealand held their commemorative services for those who lost their lives in Gallipoli in 1915 on 25th April.
The recipe is as follows - (to make around 20 biscuits)
85g Porridge oats
85g desicated coconut
100g plain flour
100g caster sugar
100g butter
1 tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp bicarbonate soda
Pre heat oven to 180 deg
Mix oats, coconut, sugar and flour in a bowl
In a pan melt butter add golden syrup. dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in 2 tbsp boiling water stir this into butter and syrup mixture.
Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the butter mixture. Stir gently to combine.
Put dessertspoon fulls of mixture onto buttered baking sheets leaveing 2.5cm apart. Bake for 8 - 10 mins until golden / cool on wire rack.
Eat and enjoy!

TOY AUDIT
Many thanks for bearing with us through our latest toy audit. We are delighted to have now completed this task (for now!) and are now launching on the task of decluttering the toy lending room as we know to some it can be rather daunting even knowing where to start to look for what you want.
WATCH OUT FOR DUPLICATE OR EXCESS TOYS FOR SALE IN THE COMING WEEKS!
We are also launching our "outreach" projects whereby we are actively seeking play groups, toddler groups, childminder networks and nurseries to visit and demonstrate the value the toy library can bring to those in the rural community around us.
If your child attends any child care setting / group please think about recommending us to the leaders and passing on our contact details - or getting theirs - so we can make contact and hopefully bring about a difference to more children and their carers.
Our promotion this month is for our most popular games so do come in and see what we have available. Especially with the cold weather forecast, perhaps it is just what we need for Easter - some family games for fun and entertainment. Games can be borrowed at 3 games counting as one choice and anything borrowed now will be yours for the whole Easter break at no extra charge.

MUSIC TALKS
IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO BOOK THE FINAL PLACES FOR THIS EXCITING ACTIVITY BEING OFFERED THROUGH THE TOY LIBRARY!
Next week sees the start of our music talks sessions where we have invited local childminders and early years practitioners to join staff and volunteers at the toy library in this exciting series of sessions.
Music Talks will be delivered by our local Musical Bumps organiser - Angela Bogie and will help build confidence and the repertoire of adults working with children to help their speech and language development.
The course details are as follows -
Location - Shepshed Toy Library, Hind Leys Campus, Shepshed, LE12 9DB
6 week accredited course on promoting communication through music for under 5’s.

A unique six week programme for pre-school settings supporting the development of speech and language through music.
It is well known that musical activities support the development of speech and language – but choosing the right activities to plan for progression is key to success. Music talks helps to ensure that every child is a talker.
The Music talks programme:
• An experienced and skilled teacher delivers weekly music sessions focusing on speech and language.
• Learning is through playful activities and supports circle time as well as free play.
• Staff are actively involved in each session and encouraged to use the songs and games between visits.
• Best practice is modelled and demonstrated – offering practical CPD appropriate to each individual setting.
• Time for additional support; additional follow-up sessions may also be arranged.
Curriculum matters… Activities and repertoire are carefully chosen to support the
development of oral motor skills and incorporate the use of puppets, resources and
percussion. The songs and games provide practical support for delivering phases one and two
of the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics strategy. Transactional singing provides opportunities
for the development of conversational skills; in addition skills of listening, turn-taking and
team-work are reinforced and practised. Gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination, spatial
awareness, sequencing and patterning also feature as part of the programme, along with the
development of fundamental musical skills for both children and staff.
Resources matter… Our children deserve excellent resources. Clarity of sound from real
wooden percussion is incomparable. Good quality, versatile puppets (as opposed to commercial
characters) reflect a child’s real world and can persuade even the most reluctant child to
participate. Such resources also motivate and encourage practitioners – helping them to
enter into activities wholeheartedly.
Songs matter … A core repertoire of simple songs and rhymes is essential; it is vital to use
these with innovative and exciting activities. Music talks material includes traditional songs,
rhymes and melodies; new ways with old tunes, and always uses music appropriate for young
voices.
Music talks is devised and written by Sarah Carling, an advisory teacher for primary and
EYFS music, and draws on her extensive experience in settings across the UK.

Music Talks will be delivered by our local Musical Bumps organiser - Angela Bogie and will help build confidence and the repertoire of adults working with children to help their speech and language development.

NEW TOYS
We have been fortunate in acquiring some good quality toys and games from the Pre School Learning Alliance in Leicester which is shortly to cease operation. The PLA Resource Centre in Knighton Lane, Leicester is however very much still operating - they stock a wide range of arts and crafts materials, wooden toys and games for sale - excellent quality Christmas present ideas! They open Tues pm / Wed / Thurs / Fri am - flyers at the toy library will give you more information.

Play & Learning Sessions
This week sees the start of our series of structured "guided play" sessions thanks to the funding support from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales.
We start with two sessions aimed at tactile and creative play inspired by Halloween and Bonfire Night. Our activities will include food tasting - but only if you can pick it up with chopsticks!; splatter painting - aprons provided!; mini beast hunts .... but in jelly!; craft masks and bags to take home.
Posters are displayed around the toy library and we have leaflets to tell you about the other sessions leading up to Christmas. We are extending the taster sessions we did last term on schema, treasure baskets and heuristic play to enable you to explore further the whys and wherefores of children's learning through play.
Do come along and support these sessions which are being run during our normal play times - this seems to suit the majority of our members having tried different days and times last term. Normal stay and play charges apply.

WOW - NEW TOYS!
Following our Nearly New Sale on 6th October we have acquired a huge number of new (to us) toys, games and equipment for everyone to borrow. We have some fantastic new puzzles and games, a new baby activity centre which I think may rival the Jumparoos for popularity!, a range of new pretend play sets, constructing kits, outdoor toys and dressing up .... and yet more!
Also we have now taken delivery of our new activity toys thanks to the Charnwood Borough Council Staying Healthy Grant - 2 balance bikes and a first motor bike!

Child Play & Development Sessions
A huge thanks to Lloyds TSB Foundation, who have provided us with the means to offer guided play sessions to support different aspects of play and development from November 2012. We have run taster guided play sessions since Easter following our successful bid to the Shepshed and Hathern Community Forum. We have explored aspects of communication, physical play and social interaction to support the Early Years Foundation recommendations.
We have deduced from attendance figures that most people will attend during our normal session times so we are now dedicating one session per week as a specific "child learning and development through guided play" session. This will mean you have dedicated support from staff and volunteers who are familiar with the concepts we are promoting and will be able to discuss with you and offer suggestions of how to support your child through play.
The dates for this term from after the half term break are -
Wed 31st October - Halloween - creative and tactile play and activity session
Mon 5th November - Bonfire Night - creative and tactile play session
Mon 12th November - Physical play / Tummy time for the Under 2's
Wed 21st November - Treasure baskets / Transporting schema
Fri 30th November - Rotation Schema
Fri 7th December - Trajectory Schema
Wed 12th December - Christmas Party & Musical Bumps (Tickets £3 10 am - 3pm)

All sessions except where indicated will be run from 9.30 - 12.00 and we ask for a contribution of £1 per family. Some additional craft activities may incur a small charge to contribute to our costs.

SCHEMA - GUIDED PLAY & TRAINING
Our next guided play session on October 12th 1 - 3 pm is about schema - you may be wary about attending not fully understanding what it will all be about - let me dispel any fears!
The word 'schema' is generally used to describe patterns of repeated behaviour which children use to explore and express their ideas and thoughts through play and exploration ....
still confused ? How about if we use examples like ...
a child in a high chair dropping things again and again - the repeated action - and your response to it - helps the child to develop meaning to what they are doing and thus extends their thinking and development.
Schemas are biological - we are born with them and they are central to how we learn and develop although they will be influenced by our surroundings and the people we regularly interact with.
Some of the schema we will be looking at are

New Term - new faces
Monday 3rd September sees us open for business as usual with loads of plans for fun and exciting activities!
We have said goodbye to Maria who has moved "up north" to explore new opportunities and so are delighted to report that one of our regular members and volunteer Jodie Smith will be taking over from Maria in the stay and play sessions.
Lots of plans afoot - this term we are exploring some of our new Play and Share (story) sacks as these have all been updated refreshed and improved and we now have around 40 - 50 available for loan.
Our theme this term will be around "our healthy bodies" incorporating aspects of healthy eating - supported by a grant from Charnwood Borough Council's Staying Healthy campaign - which will enable us to provide healthy snacks and drinks in our cafe. We will also continue our guided play sessions supported by the Community Forum bid monies with communication, schema and physical play still to come.
Our first week back we are looking at farms ... after all where does all our food come from! - with making activities, singing and story time to look forward to. The library room has had a good sort out over the holidays with shelves looking tidy and toys easily accessed - take some time to browse and choose some great toys.
Do come along - bring a friend along and you can both benefit from our "refer a friend" scheme where if you encourage a new member to join you can both borrow a Play & Share sack for free! ( Normally £2.50)

Children growing up fast – toys, games and clothes you no longer need? Can’t be bothered with ebay or car boot sales? Then come along to the Nearly New Sale at Shepshed Toy Library – register as a seller and take the hassle out of moving stuff on – and reap the rewards. Full information below!
• People interested in selling at the sale should contact the Toy Library – 01509 601146 or email shepshedtoylib@tiscali.co.uk for a sellers pack.
• Leave name, telephone number and e mail address for contact.
• Sellers pack £2 (cash or cheque payable to Shepshed Toy Library) to cover our administration cost & Stamped Addressed Envelope to receive your sale proceeds after the event (Your admin fee will be deducted from your sales proceeds if not paid in advance)
• You will receive a guidance sheet, sellers sheet and set of sticky labels - max 30 items per seller
• Percentage commission – 30% to toy library 70% to seller
• Emphasis on toys and games for sale – any clothes must be on hangers
• All items to be good quality / toys and games complete no pieces missing
• Sellers will be issued with a unique number and use this for labelling up items.
• Sellers can deposit items from 9am, sale will open from 11 – 2pm.
• Unsold items to be collected by 4pm
• Any remaining items will be accepted as donations to the Toy Library to either add to Toy Library stock or pass to other charitable organisations.
• Sticky labels will be removed from items as proof of sale and totalled up on the day.
• Cheques will be issued to sellers within 7 days of the event.

What can I sell?
You can sell baby and children’s wear (up to aged ten), maternity wear (not oversized ladies wear!), equipment, books and toys.
Clothes:
Each item sold counts towards one of your 30 items so it is best to bundle up babygrows and smaller items. We will only sell items that are of new or nearly new quality, and are clean and in good condition. Remember, this is not a jumble sale – dirty/worn-out goods will be rejected.
Toys:
Toys and puzzles must be complete. Any loose parts should be securely attached. Seal puzzles in clear plastic bag. Toys with batteries sell better if batteries are included.
Equipment:
Equipment items sell better and for more if instructions (and if you have them, guarantees) are included. Be especially careful if selling stair gates, fireguards, barriers and bed guards. These must have all the correct fittings and have no gaps where it would be possible for a baby to get its head stuck. Please include any instructions for use. (These can be duplicates downloaded from manufacturer’s website.) These, together with the fittings, should be securely attached in a separate bag.
Door bouncers, sit in activity centres and baby walkers can also be sold. To minimise the risk of accidents please ensure that door bouncers are sold with assembly instructions including a weight limit. Second hand mattresses can be sold providing they have a waterproof cover (eg. PVC) with no tears, cracks or holes.
Is there anything I can’t sell at the sale?

Can I sell my pushchair?
We can sell pushchairs with or without instructions. Obviously, pushchairs with instructions sell better so if you do have them, please attach these or you can try downloading them from the manufacturers’ website.
I have a baby sling to sell – can I sell it?
Yes, but bag -style slings can’t be sold. They are the ones with a deep pouch and an elasticated edge. Whilst these products have not been recalled, they may cause breathing difficulties in young babies. The brands and products which cannot be accepted are:

How do I make sure I don’t over or under price my items?
The guidelines are that you prices at 20-25% of the original selling price of the item you are selling. Below are some guidelines which may help you.
Please try not to overprice your items otherwise you may be surprised with the number of unsold items you are left with (particularly clothes).
Ask yourself: a) Would I buy it? b) How much would I pay? c) Do I ever want to see this again?

Only use the labels sent to you for this sale and do not exceed the maximum (30 items)

DONATION : If you do not wish to collect your unsold items mark a D on your ticket
• Attach the whole label securely.
• Where possible please use hangers for clothes. Smaller items may be placed in clear plastic bags.
• Items with no labels cannot be sold. Any items that don’t have a label will be placed on one side for collection at the end of the sale.
• Please consider sellotaping or cling filming toys that have many pieces together to ensure it stays as one item.
• Please do not label or sort through your items on the day – please ensure they are all labelled and bundled correctly before the day of the sale.
• To help you to monitor your items for sale, we have enclosed a list which we advise you to complete to record items/prices.
• It helps if you can use clearly labelled boxes (Name & seller number) (and not bags) to bring in your items. Any unsold items can then be quickly sorted and returned to you.

We plan to have outdoor fun - if the rain holds off for more than 5 minutes! and a range of crafts to make and take home inside. Sand and water play, role play, dressing up and anything else you can think of! Enjoy a drink and snack whilst the children play!
The borrowing library is open at the same time to return or renew items or select a range of toys for the rest of the holidays to keep the whole family amused once the Olympics have finished.
The stay and play session will cost £1 per child - this includes a free drink and a choice of one of our many crafts which include - pendants, bookmarks, gliders, butterfly fans, crowns or Hamma bead creations!
Additional crafts are also on offer for a small fee.

The first of our summer holiday sessions starts tomorrow - Wednesday 8th August from 9.30 - 12.00 noon, with further sessions on Wednesday 15th and 22nd.
